Thousand Pieces of Gold

Rosalind Chao & Chris Cooper give magnificent performances as the woman sold into sexual slavery and the saloon owner who buys her freedom. The LA Times lauded Kelly’s directorial debut as “a triumph [of] classic Western filmmaking,” comparing her to John Ford. But Kelly became a victim of prejudice against women directors and was never offered another movie to direct. Amid anti-immigrant phobia and since #MeToo and #TimesUp, this touching film resonates more deeply than ever.
