Hester Street

A new 4K restoration from the original negative of Joan Micklin Silver's theatrical feature debut. Carol Kane (ANNIE HALL to UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT), in her Academy Award-nominated role, stars with Steven Keats (DEATH WISH, THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE) in this touching immigrant story of Gitl (Kane), a young Jewish woman who comes to America in the 1890’s with her son, only to discover that her husband Jake (Keats) has given up the ways of the old country and taken up with a new girlfriend and a new life. By turns heartbreaking, comic, and sharply observed, this is the film that launched Joan Micklin Silver’s (BETWEEN THE LINES, CROSSING DELANCEY) career.

"A charming, wonderfully human film about the agonies, traumas, and embarrassments of becoming an American, constructed with echoes of the honesty and warmth of feeling of Fellini's AMARCORD. It is an entrancing experience." - Kenneth Turan

"HESTER STREET is uproarious and exhilarating...reaffirms the human spirit and creates an uplift instead of a downdraft." - Los Angeles Times
